UPCOMING WEBINARS

The Admission Process: Surviving the School-to-College Transition
Postponed until further notice.

School counselors and admissions officers are major players in their students and families’ lives as students prepare for, apply to and get into higher education institutions. Navigating these processes is particularly challenging for underserved, lower-income and first-generation students. Using information and recommendations from the College Board’s Complexity in College Admission: The Barriers Between Aspiration and Enrollment for Lower-Income Students and from the National Office for School Counselor Advocacy’s (NOSCA) 2011 National Survey of School Counselors: Counseling at a Crossroads, this webinar will feature experts from the counseling and admission fields who will address some of the critical issues in the college admission process and how we can better support all students.

The discussion will focus on two keys areas:

  1. The admission process: filling out forms, making deadlines, understanding the process and the outcomes
  2. The acquisition of skills and knowledge for educational success and career preparation

Speakers:

  • Margo McCoy Howe, College and Career Counselor, Discovery Canyon Campus High School, Colorado Springs, CO
  • Patricia Martin, Assistant Vice President, NOSCA, The College Board (moderator)
  • Bradley Quin, Executive Director, Higher Education Advocacy, The College Board (moderator)
  • Gordon Stanley, Director of Counseling, Marist School, Atlanta, GA

The webinar will explore the implications of the research findings and ways to reduce the financial barriers faced by many students and families.

This webinar will explore barriers to access that can be created by institutional policies and practices that inadvertently send the wrong message to aspiring students. To improve access to higher education for all students, institutional leaders must place the needs of students above those of institutions. Campus leadership is a critical component to re-align the institutional mission with the overarching goal of facilitating access. The webinar will help admissions and financial aid professionals engage meaningful discussions with institutional leadership to create greater access for all students.

Speakers:

  • Stephanie Balmer, Vice President for Enrollment & Communications and Dean of Admissions, Dickinson College
  • Carolyn Lindley, Director of Financial Aid, Northwestern University
  • Jerry Lucido, Research Professor of Education and Executive Director of the University of Southern California Center for Enrollment Research, Policy, and Practice

A panel of education researchers and admissions officers will discuss the potential impact of CCSS on admissions.
