National Commission on Community Colleges

Community colleges play an indispensable role in American education. The data are compelling and unambiguous: More than 46 percent of those who attend higher education are enrolled in two-year institutions, an increase of 18 percent during the last decade.

Yet community colleges have not always been at the center of national debates about the future of education. If the United States is to achieve its goals, both in terms of quality and equality, community colleges must play a central role in the development and implementation of national educational solutions.

To expand the key role of community colleges in connecting more students to college success, the College Board's Center for Innovative Thought convened the National Commission on Community Colleges. The Commission's final report documents the critical role that community colleges play in American education and recommends ways in which the influence of these institutions can be expanded to respond to the challenges facing the nation.
