In 2011, the College Board's Advocacy & Policy Center launched a comprehensive research study designed to improve the educational experiences and pathways of young men of color (African Americans, Native Americans, Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders, and Latino Americans). The research provided six recommendations. In response to three of six recommendations, the National Office for School Counselor Advocacy (NOSCA) developed a journal series and a downloadable companion workbook to help enhance K–12 school counselors' capacity to better support young men of color's college and career readiness. This webinar will provide a brief review of the research findings and the barriers that prevent young men of color from advancing through the education system. Guest journal writers will share their perspectives and opinions from an academic and personal perspective.

The results of the 2011 National Survey of School Counselors, Counseling at a Crossroads were released November 2011 to the nation on Capitol Hill in Washington DC and at the statehouse in Austin, Texas. The objective of the survey was to give voice to school counselors — giving insight into how they view their roles and mission, as well as capture their perspectives on measures of accountability and education policies and practices that could strengthen their roles in the systems in which they work. This webinar provides a deeper discussion of how the results of this first annual survey of secondary school counselors can be used to inform the nation in three areas: (1) pre-service training, (2) on the ground practice in secondary schools and districts, and (3) local, state and national policies.
