National Math & Science Initiative supports math and science education in the U.S.
The National Math & Science Initiative (NMSI) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to facilitating the growth of math and science education programs throughout the country. The College Board commends NMSI for its efforts to help further develop math and science education programs and reach more students. With $125 million in funding from ExxonMobil, NMSI is accelerating math and science education in the United States.
In 2007, NMSI announced its grant competition for "Training and Incentives Programs for AP® and Pre-AP® Courses." Applicants must be nonprofit, nongovernmental entities. Awards will support:
- Teacher training
- Time on task for students
- Academic-based financial incentives
- Lead Teachers programs that lead to mentoring and program sustainability
In addition to its focus on math and science, NMSI included English in this latest initiative, thereby increasing the potential to reach even more students and educators.
For more information about NMSI, visit the National Math & Science Initiative website at http://www.nationalmathandscience.org.
NMSI funding can help offset the cost of professional development for math, science, and language arts educators; offset the cost of programs and services intended to accelerate students in math, science, and language arts; and help more students achieve success in AP courses related to these subjects. As this initiative was developed specifically with AP in mind, there are a number of applicable College Board programs and services that may enhance grantees' Training and Incentives Programs. These include, but are not limited to, the following:
